Unix Services Test

Many server applications in Linux environments run as background services. This test checks the availability of each service that corresponds to an application. Also, this test points administrators to those services that were restarting frequently.

Target of the test : A Linux system only

Agent deploying the test : An internal agent

Outputs of the test : One set of results for every service that is configured for monitoring

Configurable parameters for the test

Parameter

Description

Test period

How often should the test be executed .

Host

The host for which the test is to be configured.

Port

The port number at which the specified host listens.

Service Name

Name of the service that is to be monitored. You can specify a comma-separated list of services here.

Note:

  • When configuring the Service name, make sure that you specify the Display Name of the service, and not the service Name you see in the Services window on your Linux host.

  • When monitoring an MS SQL server, the Service Name parameter will be set to MSSQLServer by default. However, if the MS SQL server being monitored was installed using a named instance, the SQL service name will change. In such a case therefore, ensure that the Service Name parameter is reconfigured to reflect the correct service name.

To save the time and effort involved in manual service specification, eG Enterprise offers an easy-to-use auto-configure option in the form of a View/Configure button that is available next to the Service Name text box. Refer to Unix Services Test for details on how to use this option.

Detailed Diagnosis

To make diagnosis more efficient and accurate, the eG Enterprise embeds an optional detailed diagnostic capability. With this capability, the eG agents can be configured to run detailed, more elaborate tests as and when specific problems are detected. To enable the detailed diagnosis capability of this test for a particular server, choose the On option. To disable the capability, click on the Off option.

The option to selectively enable/disable the detailed diagnosis capability will be available only if the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The eG manager license should allow the detailed diagnosis capability
  • Both the normal and abnormal frequencies configured for the detailed diagnosis measures should not be 0.
Measurements made by the test
Measurement Description Measurement Unit Interpretation

Service availability

Indicates the availability of this service.

The values that this measure can report and their corresponding numeric values are discussed in the table below:

Measure Value Numeric Value
Failed 0
Inactive 10
Deactivating 20
Activating 80
Reloading 90
Active 100

Note:

By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate the availability of each service. However, in the graph of this measure, the service availability is represented using the corresponding numeric equivalents only.

Service state

Indicates the current state of this service.

The values that this measure can report and their corresponding numeric values are discussed in the table below:

Measure Value Numeric Value
Failed 0
Dead 1
Exited 2
Stop-sigterm 3
Tentative 4
Auto-restart 5
Mounted 6
Plugged 7
Waiting 8
Running 9

Note:

By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate service state. However, in the graph of this measure, service state is represented using the corresponding numeric equivalents only.

Is restarted?

Indicates whether/not this service was restarted.

The values that this measure can report and their corresponding numeric values are discussed in the table below:

Measure Value Numeric Value
No 0
Yes 1

Note:

By default, this measure reports the Measure Values listed in the table above to indicate whether/not the service was restarted. However, the graph of this measure is represented using the corresponding numeric equivalents only - i.e., 0 or 1.

The detailed diagnosis of this measure lists the time at which the service was last restarted.
